AHA vs BHA vs PHA: Which Korean Exfoliant Is Right for Your Skin?
Share
Walk down any K-beauty aisle and you will see AHA, BHA and PHA on half the bottles, usually with no explanation. They are all exfoliating acids, but they work in different ways and suit different skin. Pick the wrong one and you get redness and peeling. Pick the right one and skin looks smoother, clearer and brighter. Here is the simple version.
The three acids, simply
All three loosen the glue holding dead skin cells, but the difference is where they work. AHA (glycolic, lactic, mandelic) is water-soluble and works on the surface, so it is best for dullness, rough texture and uneven tone. BHA (salicylic acid) is oil-soluble, so it gets down into pores, which makes it the one for oily, blackhead-prone and acne-prone skin. PHA (gluconolactone, lactobionic acid) has a larger molecule that stays on the surface and works slowly, the gentlest option for sensitive skin. You will also see LHA, a milder cousin of BHA. The trick is matching the acid to your skin, not buying the strongest one.
Five Korean exfoliants compared
The BHA pick for oily, clogged skin, celimax
Salicylic acid (a BHA) is oil-soluble, so it slips into pores and clears the oil and dead skin that turn into blackheads and bumps. These heartleaf pads pair it with calming heartleaf so oily and acne-prone skin gets the clear-out without the sting. Two or three nights a week is plenty.

The PHA pick for sensitive skin, Belif
PHA (polyhydroxy acid) is the largest, gentlest acid molecule, so it exfoliates on the surface without the deep sting that stronger acids can give reactive skin. This vegan PHA toner is the one to reach for if acids usually leave you red. It draws in a little moisture as it works, too.

The AHA pick for dull, uneven texture, Tocobo
AHAs like glycolic and lactic acid are water-soluble and work on the surface, lifting dull, dead skin so tone looks more even and skin feels smoother. This lemon toner is an easy AHA-forward step for texture and glow. Use it on nights you are not using the BHA, not layered on top of it.

The all-acids pick for experienced skin, Isntree
If your skin is already comfortable with exfoliation, this serum combines AHA, BHA, PHA and LHA in one step for a fuller resurfacing. It is the most advanced pick here, best for experienced users who want texture, pores and tone handled together. Start once a week and build slowly.

The gentle rinse-off gel for first-timers, Skin1004
A rinse-off gel peel is the gentlest way to start. It gathers and lifts dead skin as you massage, then washes away, with centella to keep things calm. Good for first-timers or anyone who wants exfoliation without leaving acids sitting on the skin.

Five products, five brands, around $100 for the full set. You do not need all five. Pick the one acid that matches your skin and start there.
How to choose, and how not to overdo it
Oily or acne-prone, start with the BHA. Sensitive or easily irritated, start with the PHA or the rinse-off gel. Dull or rough, reach for the AHA. Comfortable with all of them already, the all-acids serum does more in one step. Whichever you pick, the same rule applies: two or three times a week at most, at night, and sunscreen every morning after, because fresh skin burns more easily. More exfoliation is not better. Overdoing it strips the barrier and gives you the exact redness and breakouts you were trying to fix.
What it comes down to
One acid, matched to your skin, used a few nights a week. That is the whole game. Get that right and exfoliation becomes the step that makes everything else in your routine work better.
